Anyone who moves to a new country is amazing.
To leave behind what is familiar—to learn new streets, new neighbors, new laws, new expectations, and a new language—takes courage. It takes determination. It takes perseverance. And for many, learning English can feel like the biggest barrier of all. Even if we know the words, we can feel unprepared to speak or write with confidence.
We believe that God has brought people from every tribe and tongue into our community, and we see that as a gift. We believe one of the ways we can love our neighbors well is by helping them learn English—so that you can build a life here with confidence.
English for Life is a safe, encouraging place where you can grow in language and grow in friendship. Our program is designed to give you practical skills for daily life, while surrounding you with teachers and friends who cheer you on.
We take learning seriously. We encourage our students to give their best, and our teachers work hard to give their best in return. But more than just lessons, you’ll find a community that celebrates your successes, laughs with you as we learn, and patiently walks with you as you grow.
We’d love for you to join us—whether you’re just starting to learn or want to become more confident in speaking, reading, and writing English – English for Life is here for you.

When are the English classes?
All classes meet twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, from 7:00 pm to 8:45 pm, from January to June and from late August to December. Classes are for adults only.
What kind of classes do you have?
We offer literacy (learning to read and write) tutoring as well as classes that develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. All classes are in-person.
We have friendly, trained teachers who understand that learning English is hard, but when we do it together, we can enjoy the process.
When can I join a class?
You can join a class at any time, but some of the classes may already be filled for the term. If there is no space in a class for your English level, we can refer you to another program.
Your first step is to fill out this form. This step is required before you visit. The second step is to visit our program for a placement interview.
How much does it cost?
Classes are free, but we ask all students to pay $30 when they register to cover the cost of books. (link to church payment for registration here) This fee is paid once a year.
Do you offer childcare?
Yes, we offer childcare on Thursday evenings only. It is free of charge, but your children need to be registered (link to CCB child registration form here), and child care is provided as long as there is space in the program.
What if I have other questions and I don’t speak English?
You can write to Annelies at english@atonementlife.org or text her at 240-424-0028. You can also fill out this form (link to CCB form), and she will contact you. You can write in Spanish or French, or if you speak another language, please have a friend contact her for you.
